Videomash

Sometimes idly surfing the web can lead to happy little discoveries. So I was checking out this amazing Super Mario video over on Vimeo and whilst browsing the comments to see just how Andreas Heikaus had achieved his Mario-superimposed-onto-concrete effect, I found a link to a quick roundup of interesting videos over on Vimeo.

By some serendipitous mistake I found I had accidentally started two videos at once and they were looping together creating a mesmerising soundscape, no doubt aided by the beautiful Max Alper track used in the first video.

Which led me to think how nice it would be if not just the two audio tracks could combine, but also the visuals.

So I tried embedding both videos into a page, overlaying one on the other and fiddling with the settings and the transparency, and this is the result.

It’s really quite hypnotic to watch, especially when, due to the differing lengths of the videos, you get a slightly different experience both aurally and visually with every new loop through. So not bad as a first effort, even though you may get a less than optimal experience viewing the simultaneously buffering, playing and looping videos on older computers / browsers.

Next is to hunt down some more “compatible” videos and see if I can’t create a whole series of overlaid pieces. It’s just a shame that any more than two simultaneous videos tends to bring my connection to its knees.

Rapha London

Another take on the near-ubiquitous "popup shop" is in its last few weeks in Farringdon. Premium cyclist-clothiers @RaphaCycleClub have been operating a gallery-cum-shop-cum-cafe that looks like the perfect place to sip a flat white while picking up a cycling cap to go with whatever your take on the ironic cycle-courier moustache may be.

Touristiness

World map color-coded by level of touristiness, based on analysis of photos on Panoramio. Yellow indicates high touristiness, red medium touristiness, and blue low touristiness. Areas having no Panoramio photos at all are grey.

Honduras: Central America’s road less travelled

Image of sunset on Roatan

Honduras will always hold a place in my heart for the Caribbean coast, the Bay Islands and amazing times spent learning to SCUBA dive. This article from @GuardianTravel doesn’t really veer very far off-piste in terms of its recommendations, but should still be enough to convince you in the 10 minutes that along with the rest of Central America, Honduras is a place you really should consider visiting.

TypArchive

Beautiful archive of signage and street typography photography, much of it hand-painted, curated by a merry-band of type enthusiasts. I particularly like the many examples of Mexican and Tex-Mexican food stall advertising which seems to follow the design principle that you can never have either too many colours or too many different typefaces in your advertising.
